7 Tips to Help Your Loved One with IDD Become an Independent Grocery Shopper

By | October 15th, 2019|

  1. Start NOW. Let’s be real. Your loved one is not going to suddenly wake up the morning of their 22nd birthday with the skills to pick out the perfect avocado from a sea of “just okay” avocados at the grocery store. Shopping takes practice, and it is never too early to start. So, don’t spend time worrying whether they’re ready, jump right in!
  2. Start SLOW. Help your loved one as much as needed at first. As time goes by and their confidence grows, slowly start stepping back. Instead of helping them write their grocery list every time, take only a quick look at it before leaving. Start hanging back in the store, only checking in every few isles. Eventually, they’ll take the lead, and you can regroup before check-out.
